All of us imagine that when we see a murderer, we will be able to identify them by the coldness in their eyes, the obvious awkwardness of their posture, the taint of blood on their souls. The fact that there are murderers who behave like normal people scares us.

We do not want to accept the fact that the person who is sitting beside us on the bus might be a murderer, the person who serves us our morning coffee at Starbucks might be a murderer, the guard outside our office who always greets us with a smile might be a murderer.

We have no objective way of separating criminals from normal people. Just the thought of something like this makes us afraid of stepping outside our homes, the reason why we push these thoughts to the back of our minds. The story of Todd and Katrina Smith is of a similar nature.
