Love, Sex, and Marriage in Ancient Egypt

A brief look at what love, sex, and marriage were like in ancient Egypt.

In my quest for finding out about the culture surrounding love, sex, and marriage, in different ancient cultures, the usual theme was the following; most of these civilizations were rooted in a profound system of patriarchy where the men had the final say in whatever happened in the household.

Gender roles were neatly defined, and it was expected for the woman to stay at home with little choice. Elders arranged marriages, and infidelity amongst men was encouraged. All of these depict the stereotypical life of individuals living in these ancient civilizations.

However, when I researched the ancient Egyptian civilization, it immediately seemed different. The Egyptian way of life, especially when it came to some aspects of their sexuality and marriage, was more similar to modern-day civilizations than any other ancient settlement.

The way social hierarchy was set was obviously not very equal, but there was a relatively lower level of gender discrimination. Men and women were generally considered equal, and there were more rights that women enjoyed altogether compared to other civilizations.
