Sunny Kim and Daniel Ri were on their way home from a motel at 3 in the morning on September 8, 1994. Their Hyundai Grandeur, a vehicle associated with wealth, was suddenly blocked by two speeding cars from their front and back. Later identified as members of the murderous “Chijon Family” gang, six men came out of those vehicles and walked towards the couple.

They pulled Daniel out and stabbed him in the abdomen. The wounded man was subsequently beaten. Both victims were restrained with tape and brought to the gang’s hideout.

A harrowing experience awaited them.

First Death

The Chijon Family was a gang made out of unemployed individuals and former convicts. Their main purpose, as disgruntled members of society, was to rain terror upon the rich.

They had a strange way of determining who their potential wealthy victims were. At that time, the Hyundai Grandeur, which Daniel and Sunny were in, was considered a vehicle only for the rich. Hence, whoever they chanced upon driving the said vehicle would be their next victim.
