The RMS Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg in its path. It set off on its journey on April 10, with 2200 people on board, consisting of passengers and crew. Famously advertised as unsinkable, it seems the Titanic jinxed itself.

The tragedy claimed the lives of 1500 people who either drowned or froze in the unforgiving waters of the Atlantic. Decades later, the Titanic’s wreckage was finally found. It was located 350 nautical miles from the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. In 1985, we got our first images of the wreck, and they were every bit as eerie as one would expect.

Above is the first high-resolution image of the Titanic’s wreckage taken in 2012. Published in National Geographic, the picture shows the ghost of the Titanic in breathtaking detail. A chilling sight, with the greenish-blue tint of the image adding an almost ethereal feel.
