Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

One of the scariest aspects in life is the accurate prediction of future events and when someone can make such a crazy assumption which comes true in the long-term, there are people who can even believe in the involvement of some ‘higher powers’. Even scarier is this case in social sciences, when everything is changing and there are no predictions based on statistical analysis, models and accurate quantitative data.

Nevertheless, one of the first foreigners who recognized the greatness of the American project was also the man who would make such an astonishing prediction that he is even characterized as a political prophet.

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French diplomat, political scientist and historian. He was born in Paris, in 1805 and died in 1859. He was active in French politics and was the minister of foreign affairs for a short period of time.

Regardless of his nationality, he analysed society and living standards in the Western world, focusing in American politics. His most famous work was Democracy in America. Today, it appears as excellent work in terms of sociology and political science, helping people of all over the world understand the origin and the implications of the American democracy.
