The first thing that probably comes to your mind when you hear the word Chivalry is a knight in shining armor, riding through the land and fighting bandits and rogues to protect people. You also get images of the same knight being extremely courteous towards ladies and defending them from anyone who might even think of harming them.

The realities of Chivalry, however, were quite different. Chivalry was a list of rules that were introduced to keep knights and their authority in check. These rules will make you wonder about all the horrendous things that knights must have done to force those in power to introduce these rules. They are as follows:

1. Respect the Clergy

Knights had little respect for the clergy. Things got so bad that Bishop Warin of Beauvais had to introduce a law to prevent knights from beating up members of the clergy. The church was a symbol of power and respect during the middle ages.
