Most famously known for the Emancipation Proclamation and the part he played in the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was a righteous President. He helped usher in the end of the sordid institution of slavery. As such, he is a household name in America, an iconic character often identified by his impressive beard.

Though his contributions to the American government and his eventual assassination are well-known, his private life is discussed less frequently. In this article, we’ll look at seven lesser-known facts about ol’ Abe and get a better understanding of Lincoln.

1. He was a pretty good wrestler.

Lincoln played many sports as a young man, but he excelled in one above all others: wrestling. Standing at six foot four, he was a formidable opponent to any challenger.

Furthermore, his excellent reach gave him incredible grappling ability. His prowess was so overwhelming that he only lost one match out of three hundred! His competence as a wrestler earned him a spot in the Wrestling Hall of Fame.

2. He actually didn’t like being called “Abe.”
