Though bank robbers and jewel thieves are often the subjects of cinema and literature, art thieves fly under most people’s radars.

Art heists can indeed prove very lucrative, assuming one can get away with it.

It may be surprising at first, but the heists I’m going to talk about will show that it might be easier to steal the Mona Lisa than rob a bank.

1. The Police Robbery

On March 18, 1990, one of the most profitable and successful art heists took place.

The robbers were able to get away with spoils worth 200 million dollars, which amounts to around 500 million adjusted for inflation.

The case is still unresolved, with the museum offering ten million dollars for any information that leads to the recovery of the 13 stolen art pieces.

The heist was carried out by two individuals who dressed as police officers.

They were able to convince the security guards to break protocol and let them in so they could investigate a reported disturbance within the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
