In 2022, we have become far too aquatinted with modern dating methods. As tiresome and fruitless as it may be to send that Instagram DM or make a dating profile. Here are six hysterical and absurdly sexist dating tips from a 1938 magazine, which show just how terrible it used to be in the last century.

1. Speaking to the Waiter? Absolutely Not!

It would be considered quite abnormal today if women were not allowed to speak to men in another capacity but their girlfriends or wives. In 1938, the landscape was different, to say the least. “Don’t be familiar with the head waiter under any circumstances” was a specific rule, along with “Not being Conspicuous talking to other men.”

Any form of communication — as simple as asking for a glass of water from the server at the table or chatting with any man in the vicinity would ensure that “Your date will never call you again,” threatened the magazine. This shows how women were viewed as both sexual objects for the service of one man but also how women had no agency to speak to men since it was already assumed it would dishonor them and their date.
