A few shocking facts about Charles III include:

1. He is the heir to the Throne of India

Charles’ grandfather, King George VI, was the last Emperor, or King-Emperor, of India.

The Royal Titles Act of 1877 made Queen Victoria Empress of India, creating the title Queen-Empress. The last Mughal Emperor of India Bahadur Shah II relinquished his throne when Her Majesty’s Government took direct control of India from the British East India Company in 1858. They forced Bahadur Shah II to abdicate because of his support for the rebels in the Indian War of Independence, or Great Mutiny, in 1858.

George VI relinquished the title of Emperor when India became an independent republic in 1947. However, Charles is theoretically the heir to the Indian throne because he is the grandson of the Last Emperor.

2. He could descend from Genghis Khan

Charles, and his mother Queen Elizabeth II, could be related to the House of Basarab, the medieval rulers of Wallachia.
