Spiro Agnew’s Story Shows they Can Prosecute Trump
History shows prosecutors can charge former President Donald J. Trump Sr. (R-Florida) and possibly send him to prison.
A US Attorney successfully prosecuted a US vice president and forced him to resign. The vice president was Spiro Agnew (R-Maryland).
On 10 October 1973, Agnew plead nolo contendere (no contest) to one charge of tax evasion in a federal court in Baltimore. The nolo contendere plea was part of a deal that allowed Agnew to avoid prison time. Agnew also paid a $10,000 fine.
The Tragedy of Spiro Agnew
Ironically, Agnew’s life was an American success story that took a tragic turn. The son of a Greek immigrant, Agnew grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where his father ran a restaurant and sold vegetables from a roadside stand.
Agnew studied law at the University of Baltimore and worked as an insurance underwriter before World War II. He served as a US Army Officer in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the invasion of Germany.
