George Herbert Walker Bush was the 41st President of the United States. Before he entered politics, he had a distinguished career in military service. He became a pilot in December 1941. Bush was not even nineteen, which made him the youngest commissioned pilot in US Navy history at the time.

Bush participated in an astounding 58 combat missions during his career, most of which were during World War II. Bush’s foray into politics did not start directly with his Presidency. He ran for Senator twice but did not win the general election. However, he was elected to the US House of Representatives and served in many official governmental positions.

While most of these facts are well-known, a rather harrowing tale from Bush’s personal life is less ubiquitous. Specifically, Bush narrowly escaped being cannibalized by Japanese soldiers during World War II. Seriously.

In today’s article, we’ll look at one of the most terrifying near-misses in history.
