During World War II, Mussolini’s daughter, a German spy, and a banker’s wife risked their lives to uncover Axis secrets. It was because of the fearless work of these women that exclusive Nazi secrets could be revealed, which would prove to be instrumental in the trials against them later on.

Edda Ciano’s Dilemma

Benito Mussolini, the fascist ruler of Italy from 1922 to 1943, had a daughter named Edda Ciano. She had to do what nobody else would have dared to do in order to save her husband; she had to blackmail Adolf Hitler. In a letter to the Führer dated January 10, 1944, she said that,

“for some time, the documents have been in the hands of those who are authorized to utilize them in case anything should happen to my husband.”

She threatened to disclose Galeazzo Ciano’s private diaries if Hitler didn’t release the Italian leader within three days — a gamble as implausible as it was courageous.
