Humans are problem solvers. We tackled the struggles of hunting and gathering with tools, ingenuity, and farming. Same goes for cold and darkness. Control of fire and harnessing it through illumination made these more manageable.

But there’s something that’s a bit more difficult: risk. Everything we do or plan to do has some type of risk of failure or disaster involved in it.

The ancient Stoics handled it through philosophy. In their dichotomy of control, they tell us there are certain things out of our control, but we can always control how we think about these things.

It’s a nice thought. Although most would prefer something more concrete. For those, there’s insurance. For instance, according to People Magazine, celebrities insure their most valuable assets.

  • Bruce Springsteen reportedly has his vocal cords insured, as does Mariah Carey
  • Soccer stars David Beckham & Cristiano Ronaldo similarly insured their legs for mind bending sums
  • Actress America Ferrera claims to have her teeth insured for millions due to sponsorship by Aquafresh (toothpaste)
