The story of the mysterious country begins with something we all know & love: The British Empire.

I’m just kidding. But the British did play an important role in forming a country that existed between the US & Canada.

Here’s How The Country Was Created…

Europeans first settled the area under a land grant. This grant was then sold to a land-speculation company by indigenous people. Meanwhile, another group of indigenous people offered the same land to a different company. Oops.

Following the Revolutionary War, the companies issued overlapping land grants to settlers. But after the War of 1812, both companies were in dire financial straits. So, they merged land claims and formed an area known as Indian Stream.

But before we go any further, we need to learn some important historical context…

Europeans have always been great at drawing maps and defining national borders. (Note the sarcasm). It’s not like arbitrary lines drawn by rich white dudes have ever caused conflict anywhere else in the world…. right?
