Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, Ludwig Van Beethoven is widely regarded as one of the greatest classical composers in music.

In his lifetime, he composed 722 works ranging from piano sonatas and string quartets to symphonies. He is one of the most celebrated composers in the music industry, and many people remember him as the deaf musical prodigy who composed Für Elise.

What many people tend to overlook are the troubling aspects of his personality and personal life. Being raised by an obsessive and abusive father that wanted his son to be a musical prodigy took quite a toll on him.

In the final few decades of his life, he sought a musical prodigy of his own in his little nephew and became involved in legal battles for his custody.

His Family Life Was Complicated

Beethoven was the oldest of three brothers, and his father, Johann Van Beethoven, sought great things from his first son. He wanted his son to become a musical prodigy, but his approach to the matter was quite unorthodox.

The man was a notorious alcoholic, and his methods for instilling discipline in his child were quite abusive
