Former Pope Benedict XVI passed away recently at the age of 95, over a decade after he stepped down due to ill health. Following his resignation as Pope in 2013, he became the first pontiff to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

He served as head of the Roman Catholic Church for eight years. Benedict’s final years were spent in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery inside the Vatican walls, where he died on Saturday at 9:34 a.m. (08:34 GMT). His burial will take place on January 5, and his successor, Pope Francis, will preside.

Pope Benedict XVI was called “one of the great theologians of the 20th century” by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. Pope Francis praised his predecessor in his first public remarks since the news of Pope Benedict’s death, calling him a “gift to the church” and praising his “nobility and kindness.” However, he left behind a very bleak legacy and was capable of horrific wickedness, both of which are often overlooked!
