The Wanggongchang Explosion in Beijing, China, is considered by many as one of the deadliest explosions to have ever occurred in recorded history. In fact, the blast was so destructive, and its impacts so profound, that it not only left thousands of people dead but also brought an end to the Ming dynasty about 20 years after the explosion. 17h century China had not seen modern science become an essential part of society, and hence the cause of this blast remains a mystery.

Even though there exist multiple detailed records of the explosion happening, it is speculated that actual events might have been shrouded under a mist of yellow journalism. From theories ranging from mishandling of the gunpowder at the Wanggong armory to speculation of a meteor crash that led to this devastation, this is the story of The Great Tianqi Explosion.
