The story of a great Indian freedom fighter who was born 132 years back this week.

“The pen was mighter than the sword” is the fittest proverb for this Indian freedom fighter. His speech and poems were making even the parliamentarians in the House of Commons to panic. His passionate speech and words brought many youngsters in British India out of their comfort zone and to fight for freedom. His is Subramaniya Bharathiyar, also called the Mudasi Kavingar (Turban Poet).

Preface:

Bharathiyar was an epitome of Tamil literature during the Indian independence movement. He was a well educated, well-taught man who boldly criticized many of the discrimination and superstitious beliefs during the early part of the 20th century. Bharathiyar was quoted as Maha Kavi (Great Poet) by his followers. Many got inspired by him into writing Tamil poems and literature. The most famous among them is Tamil poet Bharathdasan( which translates to “Follower of Bharathiyar.”).

Born in a village of Ettiyapuram and born in an upper class of society, Bharathiyar was a staunch ideologist from a very young age. Many tragedies marked his childhood. He lost his mother at a very young age. He was under the influence of his father, Chinnaswamy Iyer, who…
