Robert Ressler was always enthralled by killers. When he was nine, “the Lipstick Killer” was on the loose. The killer had murdered two women and a six-year-old girl whose dismembered parts were found in a sewer. One of the crime scenes revealed a message scrawled in lipstick, “For heavens sake catch me Before I kill more I cannot control myself.” He followed the newspaper accounts with intense interest.

Unknown to Ressler at the time, he grew up close to another serial killer, John Wayne Gacy, “The Killer Clown”, who murdered 33 men and boys. Ressler lived four blocks away and they were in the Boy Scouts together. Ressler ruminated later, “I sometimes wonder how we ended up on the opposite sides of the law. What made me a cop? What made him a serial killer?”

Ressler studied Criminology before being inducted into the Army. He worked as an investigator delving into arson and homicides. This type of work kept his interest, and he returned to college to complete his Masters in Police Administration.
