The Most Successful General in American History and why they forgot him
Strangely, the most successful general in American history was forgotten and smeared for over a century. That general was Ulysses S. Grant.
Grant became America’s most successful general during the Civil War. For example, Grant accepted the surrender of three enemy armies. He was successful in five large campaigns. Additionally, Grant’s forces fought in 12 major Civil War battles.
Impressively, Grant’s armies inflicted over 190,760 casualties on the Confederate Army. In contrast, Grant’s armies suffered 153,642 casualties.
In 1862, Grant’s forces won some of the Union’s first major victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Moreover, the media gave Grant the nickname “Unconditional Surrender” after he forced Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner to surrender.
Additionally, Grant won the first large-scale battle in American history at Shiloh. Over 110,000 troops fought at Shiloh and 23,746 died there.
How Grant Won the Civil War
Grant won the most important battle of the Civil War, the Siege of Vicksburg. Union President Abraham Lincoln (R-Illinois) called Vicksburg the “key to victory.”
