Emperor Qin Shi Huang was one of the most powerful rulers in ancient China.

He is known for unifying China and his massive building projects, including the Great Wall of China. But one obsession dominated his reign: his quest for immortality.

The Emperor’s Obsession

According to legend, the Emperor was convinced that he could live forever if he found the elixir of life. He searched far and wide for the elixir, consulting with alchemists and searching for magical objects.

One of the substances that the Emperor believed could grant him immortality was mercury, a deadly poison. He thought that if he drank a potion made of mercury, he would become immortal.

So he ordered his alchemists to create a potion made of mercury and other toxic substances, and when they presented it to him, he eagerly drank it.
