The story of King Richard II is known throughout the world, not only because he was one of the more famous kings of England but because William Shakespeare immortalized his position in his famous play Richard II. His story is one that makes you wonder whether he was indeed an evil king (as seen in his later years) or if he was a good, loving man and husband, who was just thrown into a game of thrones from a very young age which caused his change in behavior. This is a look at the now famous and tragic life of Richard II, whose reign laid the foundations for many years of civil war, which changed the face of Britain forever.

Richard of Bordeaux Becomes King Richard II

Born in Bordeaux as the second son to the Black Prince, Edward, Richard was not first in line to inherit the throne. He had an older brother Edward of Angoulême, who was supposed to be the successor to his father’s throne. However, he tragically passed away from the bubonic plague at just five, leaving Richard as the heir to the throne.
