The screams were heard down the corridor. Blood curdling cries of pain. The guards, shocked into action, came rushing into the bedchambers of Emperor Gaozong’s first-rank concubine.

Before them stood Wu, the concubine, cradling her baby, tears running down her cheek.

“My baby!” wept Wu, holding the dead infant close to her. “The empress has murdered the emperor’s daughter!” she sobbed.

It was the final straw for the emperor. Within the year, Lady Wu would take Empress Wang’s place, manipulating the emperor like a puppet as she slowly poisoned him to death.

It is said, that on Wu’s quest to become the eventual Sacred and Divine Empress Regnant, she had murdered five of the emperor’s sons (including two of her own). She also had executed two of her brother’s sons, one of her sister’s, the sister’s daughter and several hundred of her husband’s relatives.

Her first victim, was Empress Wang and her Consort Xiao. Empress Consort Wu wasn’t happy with the speed her husband was moving. He dithered and wanted to show mercy to his empress.
