Boredom is a powerful motivator. It pushed me to pick up a small book one day while I was waiting for my dad. The little book had been sitting around our house as long as I could remember. I’d often pass it while it sat on the shelf without a thought.

This little book called “The Epic Of Gilgamesh” was alien to me. The foreword revealed it was a story found carved on 12 stones in the time of ancient Mesopotamia around 1300 to 1000 BC.

Despite the story being ancient, I was surprised how readable and relateable the tale was. You could turn the epic into a Hollywood level movie today and it would pack the theaters. Hidden messages within the story also spoke to the modern reader as well.

It was a tale of leaving home to seek adventure and finding your place in the world. Its characters experienced loneliness, friendship, loss, joy, pain, and confusion.

It explored deep topics like the eventual mortality of us all, the importance of social bonds, and the struggles of friendship. All of this was captured in a story created by ancient people who didn’t even have paper.
