The history of feminism is fascinating and nuanced. From suffrage campaigns to the sexual revolution, there have been plenty of individuals who’ve left their mark, influencing society with their talent and tenacity.

Yet certain women get a disproportionately large amount of historical attention, hogging the limelight at the expense of other great heroines.

Whilst you probably haven’t heard of these three women, it’s hard to deny how inspirational their stories are.

1. Victoria Woodhull

After moving to New York with her sister Tennie, Victoria Woodhull met a wealthy industrialist named Cornelius Vanderbilt. Cornelius agreed to back the sisters as proprietors of a stock brokerage firm, making them the first women to become stockbrokers on Wall Street.

With the business running successfully, Victoria announced her intention to run for President of the United States. She and Tennie also started a publication called Weekly, a radical newspaper advocating women’s suffrage…
