How an ancient Celtic festival became Halloween

In August, clerks at my local supermarket cleared a two-car garage-sized space in the back corner of the store. Between the fresh vegetables and fish counter, they stacked hundreds of pallets of candy — enough sugar to induce a diabetic coma in half our city’s children.
