Where Are We in America’s Life Cycle?

It’s one of the bitter realities of life — you don’t know how much time you have left. It’s like that for societies, too.

Most people acknowledge that nations have life cycles; even the “America will always be the greatest country in the world” crowd must vaguely understand that this isn’t really true, at least in the long run. America has certainly felt as though it was in terminal decline during previous crises — the Civil War, Great Depression, and political and economic crises of the late 1960s-early 1970s come to mind.
