less = more

Do Less, Better.

A design principle for everyone.

Robert L. Glass said it best back in 2002 — in his book Facts and Fallacies of Software Engineering.

“For every 25 percent increase in problem complexity, there is a 100 percent increase in complexity of the solution.”

I’ve now sat on all sides of the table. Client, strategic partner, inventor/creator, and everyday user. In every single one of those seats, the easiest thing to do is… more.

There are infinite things to add, features to change, and scope to creep.

At the end of the day, features solve problems, right?! Logically, more features solve it better, right?!

Wrong.

Before you add something, stop. Look at your data. What’s being used, why and how? If you don’t have data, how many real people can you talk to that represent your ideal customer?

Is your solution looking for a problem — or, are you solving a real need?

Before you design another anything, or add “just one more thing” — stop yourself and ask…

Can I do less, better?
