During the last few weeks I’ve come across various lists and maps of AI startups. When CB Insights published “AI 100: The most promising artificial intelligence startups of 2024” two days ago I thought that it was worth compiling all the links together so you have the full picture of what 2 VC firms, 1 market intelligence platform and dozens of AI/ML enthusiasts and practitioners, data scientists, and tech writers think about AI and hot startups on AI arena.

The 2024 MAD (Machine Learning, AI & Data) Landscape by Matt Turck (FirstMark)

https://mad.firstmark.com/

FirstMark’s tenth annual overview, examining the data, analytics, machine learning, and AI sectors, has been unveiled by Matt Turch, expressing unparalleled enthusiasm and optimism for the current state and future prospects of these fields. The 2024 MAD (Machine Learning, AI, & Data) landscape showcases a significant expansion, featuring 2,011 logos, an increase from 1,416 the previous year. This growth includes 578 newcomers, a stark contrast to the initial 2012 version, which featured only 139 logos.

This densification of the landscape is attributed to successive, substantial waves of new company formations and investments. Initially sparked by a decade-long emphasis on data infrastructure — beginning with the Big Data movement and evolving into the Modern Data Stack — the momentum has now shifted to a new phase, propelled by advancements in ML/AI, particularly highlighted by the surge in Generative AI technologies.

The landscape of generative AI has seen a transformative rise since ChatGPT’s debut, ushering in a new era of consumer AI applications. A16z’s Top 100 consumer products list, published on March 13, is divided into 50 web products and 50 apps. The analysis has scrutinized web traffic data (according to SimilarWeb) to rank the top 50 AI-first web products (as of January 2024). Similar to the web ranking, mobile apps were ordered according to monthly active users, per Sensor Tower data (as of January 2024).

The latest assessment in January 2024, contrasting with the September 2023 report, indicates a market in flux, with over 40% of the companies being new entries. Significant observations from the updated analysis include the diversification of AI applications, with novel categories emerging alongside sustained interest in virtual companionship and productivity enhancements. The mobile landscape, particularly, has revealed distinct consumer preferences and interactions compared to web-based AI applications. These insights, drawn from web traffic and mobile app data, not only spotlight the leading AI products but also reflect broader trends in AI adoption, investment, and technological development.
