While attending the IMA Meonske Conference at Kent State University last week. The luncheon speaker on the first day was Jeffrey Thomson, the President and CEO of the Institute of Management Accountants.

Jeff’s topic was “The Future of the Accountant in Business: Staying Relevant in the Digital Age” — download here.

One of Jeff’s key messages was the importance of upskilling and, in particular, building fundamental data management and analytics capabilities.

Data Management Slide note

Using Microsoft Excel, every business professional has the opportunity to start down the road of data management and analytics with a tool they currently have!

Just. Get. Started.

It may be daunting to think about getting started, but as Gary Vaynerchuk says:

Jeff’s talk prompted me to “dust off” a list of items that are fundamental to getting started with data analytics in Excel — and I created a survey.

The survey results will be used in my upcoming talk — “Introduction to Excel Power Query” — at the IMA Annual Conference in Indianapolis on June 18, 2018.

So here is the survey overview:

BASIC data analytics knowledge and capabilities can be a difference maker in your professional career.

Microsoft Excel is a basic, but increasingly sophisticated, tool to perform robust analytics and visualizations. And, at any rate, Excel is the “gateway” to learning more sophisticated analytics tools and capabilities (R, Python, PowerBI, Tableau, etc.).

Below are 20 questions that are fundamental to getting started and expanding your MS Excel data analytics knowledge.

Rate your knowledge of each question on a scale of 1–5:

1 — I have no idea

3 — I am aware of this topic and can talk about it.

5 — I am knowledgeable of this topic and can do it.

Complete the survey, and I will provide an analysis of the results to all participants down the road. :-) Thanks for your help!
