Sarah Pate, administrative secretary for Mercer University’s Tift College of Education, said she likes the way Mercer is interacting with the Macon community, but it’s a work in progress.

“I think that right now Mercer is concentrating more on the downtown area, but…there are some other areas that Mercer could eventually put their hand print on,” she said.

Pate wants to eventually see Macon become a university town like Athens or Columbus, she said.

“I think we have a lot of potential to grow and as Mercer becomes more vested in the community, I think that’s what we’re going to see happen.”

Mercer University’s Center for Community Engagement provides students with optional service projects and opportunities to engage with the Macon community.

On Sept. 24, Mercer hosted it’s biggest ‘Be A Good NeighBear’ yet, according to Mercer News. This was a Saturday spent serving the Macon community by cleaning up neighborhoods with the help of local organizations like Fuller Center for Housing, Habitat for Humanity and the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank.
