They like their Oreos hard in Mumbai, India. In a video titled “These Oreos Will Get You Drunk” produced by Buzzfeed, consumers are introduced to a new way of looking at a delectable American-favorite cookie.

Although we may feel mentally impaired by the greatness of normal Oreos, a bar in India has actually achieved the feat of taking patrons to another mental state after imbibing the cookie. I chose this particular video explainer, largely, because of how unique the story is.

I’ve never heard of people putting alcohol in Oreos — and simply the idea of getting drunk off Oreos, a common innocent treat, is simply funny to ponder. I found the piece on Buzzfeed’s “Videos” category because I knew the site created video explainers.

Outside of the creative title and story topic, the explainer was an effective piece of journalism for several reasons: the music, brevity and visuals for showing how the Oreos were made. Right from the onset, the music is a good choice for the explainer. It’s upbeat and complements the visuals well.

The brevity of the piece was vital to its effectiveness. The video is barely more than one minute long, but during that time we are provided with all of the information we need; it keeps the piece simple and to the point.

Because of how short the video is, it’s important to include enticing visuals. There are many instances of quick cuts and close-up shots. On top of the video, the producers add text instead of vocal commentary. Between the text and moving visual, it creates an enticing combination that keeps the viewer watching.

Overall, it’s a compelling piece of journalism. The title alone caught my eye and caused me to choose this video over other viable options. For anyone who has eaten or eats Oreos, it hits closer to home. It’s funny to envision oneself getting drunk off eating some Oreos.

We all know the cookies and cream take you to a different dimension, but we didn’t realize they actually take that to the next level in India.
