Let’s Review #2 — Reluctant role models
We review…
In this episode of Let’s Review, Kim & Jenn ask some important questions about role models, celebrity, and whether African-Americans have a duty to use their platform for bigger causes.
Are people in the public eye, particularly people of color, automatically role models because they are so visible?
Are athletes obligated to use their fame as a platform to speak out about social issues?
Our guest for this episode is Dhani Jones. He’s a quintessential Renaissance Man. He played football for the National Football League for eleven years. He’s hosted a travel show, one we highly recommend, called Dhani Tackles the Globe for the Travel Channel. And he’s used his platform to start BowTie Cause, a unique philanthropy tool that generates awareness and funds for charities nationwide.
Featured in this episode…
Charles Barkley explains his 1993 Nike advert, “I am not a role model,” to CNN in 2014.
Marshawn Lynch, it turns out, has already told you why he doesn’t enjoy talking to the media.

We couldn’t resist recommending this clip of Dhani training for the Scottish Highland Games. We think the purple kilt he rocks in the clip would look great with one of his bowties.
Jenn’s recommendation
Phil Black’s Manhood Project based in Detroit.
