I used to always tell my housekeepers “make sure you clean the room good very good. Because your last look is their first look”. And that is still true within the hospitality industry.

When a guest walks into a hotel room their first impression should be one of cleanliness. And it all comes down to a hotel’s housekeeping team to pull this off.

Through my years of experience in the hospitality industry, I’ve picked up some tips & tricks that I’d like to share with you today.

Tip 1 — Fold the Toilet Paper

Does it really matter what your bathroom tissue looks like? Yes it does. Folding the bathroom tissue in a neat triangle shows your guests you like to take care of the smallest details and makes them feel welcome.

Tip 2— A Method to the Madness

Figure out a method to clean the room. An effective way is to start in the bathroom by spraying all the cleaning chemicals and then finish the room while those chemicals are soaking. This method will ensure that nothing gets missed. Remember, “your last look is your guest’ first look”.

Tip 3— Microfiber to the Rescue

The secret to efficient dusting is a proper cleaning cloth. Microfiber is the best! If you don’t have one, use a rag that’s 100% cotton. Avoid using terrycloth towels or polyester — they can actually create more dust.

Tip 4— Got an Extra Toothbrush?

Keep some extra toothbrushes on housekeeping carts. These can be great for getting in small area in the bathroom, especially near the bottom screws of a toilet.

Tip 5— Vacuum Outside In

Popular to the method of starting at the end and making your way out, it’s better to start at the entrance of the room going in, then making your way back out. This way you will hit the entry (high traffic area) twice.

Tip 6— Bed Making Tip

Fitted sheets can be tough to work with. No matter which corner you start with, you almost always realize you put the long end of the fitted sheet on the short end of the mattress. Marking the inside of the fitted sheet with a fabric marker will do the trick and save you time.

Tip 7— The Best Cleaner

You would think there would be some secret weapon up our sleeves. But what does the trick here is white vinegar and water. It cleans well, and even clears cloudiness from residue left behind by other cleaners. Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar and 3 parts water.

There you have it! 7 housekeeping hacks to keep your guest rooms clean as a whistle. Feel free to share your tips in the comments below.
