Well it appears we are just about halfway through Social Media Marketing at George Brown College, and wow — have we learned so much!

As we delve further into the many social media platforms, I am keen to embrace these new teachings as I continue my personal and professional journey in social media. Already I have become more aware of Facebook advertising, or the more preferred Tweet format, and now I am taking my hand at blogging. With the halfway point of the course in sight, I thought I would provide insight into my journey in taking this course at George Brown College.

Work Opportunity

I have worked at a small non-profit for about two years, but did not have a focus on non-profit with my post-secondary education. What began as an administrative role has transitioned into a database/donor relations/communications position. With a limited budget, our social media is used primarily as an awareness tool but with this class and other external research, I would love the opportunity to show my manager and Board what the power of paid advertising could possibly have on our brand.

ShelterBox Canada is part of an affiliate network of ShelterBox in the UK. Over the last two months there has been a massive global rebrand and we recently launched our new website to enhance the donor experience.

With all of these exciting changes, I hope that our Board can embrace the potential power of social media for our organization.

Personal Interest

One of my closest friends moved to Toronto to begin her journey in social media marketing at an agency. By staying in touch and hearing how about her experience, I was provided quite a bit of detail into what social media marketing actually entails. I really had no idea before, and prior to taking this course I often would reach out to my friend to get her advice on strategies at ShelterBox Canada.

With her insight, I quickly grew to enjoy the possibilities of social media and sharing a message with (potentially) followers around the world.

I personally use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn and Pinterest and had a very mediocre travel blog during a couple trips abroad. So, needless to say, I am incredibly interested in learning more about perfecting my own personal channels, as well.

Potential Career Focus

I never really thought I would try to be a social media marketer or even considered a possibility of a job in social media. My outlook on that has certainly shifted from taking this course and with how my work position has evolved, and the idea of focusing on communications is absolutely a possibility.

I have been a bit of a nomad over the past few years, but have been in Toronto for about two years and am very much so settling in. This city is an amazing hub for such positions, so I feel like I will certainly be sticking for a bit longer.
