Any seasoned fantasy football fan knows that there’s nothing quite like draft day. Sure your friends, the excitement and the trash talk have you all fired up, but there’s nothing like being able to put your own draft pick on the board.

I’ve seen it happen too often where people will come together to draft, but end up making their picks online. Now I’m not knocking using the online drafting service that your league’s site provides. There’s a place and a time for that. However this isn’t one of those times.

This is a time where you need to feel the rush of excitement and nerves as you place your first round pick on the board. There’s absolutely no feeling like it.

There are a few main reasons you should buy a fantasy football draft board. Or at least make your own from scratch.

Fantasy Football Trash Talk

To be honest, you don’t need to purchase a draft board to hear the trash talk from your league mates. That is going to come no matter what. However what having a draft board will do is cause everyone to scrutinize each pick even more closely than before.

This will happen because the pick will constantly be staring everyone in the face for 16 rounds. “But seriously, why did Joe Flacco get taken in round 7.” That ‘s the kind of stuff that will occur all night long.

Fantasy Football Analysis

When you draft online everyone will look at your pick really quickly and then move on to the guy that’s up next. Online you don’t have the opportunity to analyze your opponents moves or strategies and it’s something that could cost you big time.

You’ll also have the chance to learn who stuck to their fantasy rankings and who panicked, you can’t tell that online. The things you can learn by watching people is simply remarkable.

The True Fantasy Football Environment

Drafting your team online is a great way to get acclimated to the game, but it’s no way to continue living your life. I promise that once you see and feel what a fantasy draft board brings to your league you’ll never want to go back. It’s a life changing experience.

Having a fantasy football draft board will bring out the true colors of those in your league. It will bring in even more serious trash talk, over analysis of your and other peoples picks and it will show you how good of friends you truly are. I continue to say that I believe that fantasy football is about the whole experience. Don’t get me wrong, winning the championship is great, but it’s everything that happened along the way that made it as great as it was.

If you want to see how serious and dedicated your league truly is you need to get a draft board. You’ll see who is truly unprepared, who truly gets flustered when their guy gets taken and who really just doesn’t care. The things you can learn are incredible.

Buying a Fantasy Football Draft Board

Like I mentioned earlier, you don’t have to buy your own draft board, but I’d highly recommend it. Most draft boards at the basic level are around $40 each. If you play in a ten person league that’s a measly $4/person. I know you don’t think you can spare it, but trust me you won’t miss that Starbucks coffee for one morning. The time and frustration that you’ll save yourself from by buying a board instead of making your own will be worth every penny.

If you decide that you’d rather design/create your own fantasy draft board by hand, more power to you. I’d recommend picking up a few pieces of poster-board, a few different color markers and some stickers that you can write on. It’d also be a good idea to get some tape, thumbtacks or another item to keep your draft board hanging for all to see. You want to eliminate all the questions, “Who did they just pick?”.

The idea of purchasing a fantasy football draft board is nothing new, but it’s something you should consider if you don’t do it already. I promise it’ll make the in-person experience that much better. Take my fantasy advice. Or don’t.
