I had a fascinating interaction with Alexandra, a young French professional who had decided to stay in a small Indian village, Dharwad and serve as a volunteer at Kalkeri Sangeet Vidhalay (KSV) for one year. I wondered, what would be her motivation to take a break from her career and from all the comforts that we aspire to acquire. She seemed to be very happy and thrilled. Alexandra was a part of the group of talented kid-musicians who came down to perform at the Good Graffiti Fest and had stayed over at my place.

My first interaction with KSV was during the Jagriti Yatra and every since I have been associated with them. The school operates on Gurukul system and serves over 200 students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. They are offered not only accommodation and good education, but also training in Indian classical music.

Rare indeed, is this institute that is not only preserving our classical art and music but also developing strong future-citizens. Art and Music is a means for children to direct their focus inwards and develop themselves. What is also amazing is the fact that a Canadian-French couple started it, here in rural India. Mathieu and Agathe travelled India extensively and stayed at Shanti Niketa for two years, from where they got the inspiration to start a music school. They have learnt Classical Indian Music and speak several Indian languages.

KSV is a non-profit initiative, based in Dharwad (near Bangalore) district in Karnataka. There is no fee for the students and the school is funded by donations from individuals.
