Growing up, his grandma used to call him “pretty” but due to her Memphis drawl, folks misheard it as “penny.” The moniker stuck and the rest is history.

Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway was drafted third overall in 1993 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors before being traded to the Orlando Magic for Chris Webber.

Penny was teammates with Shaquille O’Neal in Orlando for three seasons and played some of the most exciting basketball of his career there.

At the time, many expected the Penny and Shaq duo to develop into one of the premiere one-two punches in NBA history and ultimately win multiple championships.

However, the tandem eventually parted ways. Shaq signed a seven-year $120 million contract with the Lakers while Penny stayed a few more seasons in Orlando before moving on to play for the Suns, Knicks, and Heat.

During his basketball career, Hardaway was a four-time All-Star and a USA Basketball gold medalist.
