Before I begin, please pay attention to the title of the post. I’m saying can be, not will be or is. Common sense should say there’s no way I’m saying is, because he has yet to play a possession in the NBA.

I’m saying this because some people don’t pay attention or don’t read the post in its entirety. They will cherry-pick certain things, then call themselves debunking or disputing that point without ascertaining or processing everything that was said, and they look ridiculous.

With that out of the way, Thursday night, with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected center Victor Wembanyama from France.

When I was taking Sports Management classes last year, there was a lot of hype behind Victor Wembanyama, who wasn’t even entering the draft at the time. Since I was already scouting NBA draft prospects as an assignment, I decided to take a look at him. From what I saw, I understood what the fuss was about.

He’s 7–5 but he moves like a guard. He plays on both ends; he has an inside and outside game. He can shoot off the dribble, he can create his own shot. He handles the ball extremely well for a big man, and he protects the rim.

There weren’t too many flaws I found in his game. The only thing I see is that he needs to get stronger — he’s listed between 210–220 pounds— so he could get pushed around under the rim by stronger players, and this could affect his low post game, in terms of him getting in a position to get the shot he wants, which I will also add he should incorporate a few more post moves, but all of that will come in time.

I saw the other day that he had dinner with other San Antonio greats Tim Duncan, David Robinson (AKA The Twin Towers) and Manu Ginobili. If I’m him, I would pick their brains, especially the Twin Towers.

Overall, I realize that it’s not guaranteed that it works out, but his ceiling, potential/upside made him too good to risk passing up. If he pans out, I think he will, and continues to develop his game, he will be a nightmare in the NBA for years to come.
