Have you ever felt like you’re sitting down to an empty page with no idea of how to fill it up?

I like to think of myself as a creative person, but that part of my brain is not always on. Sometimes, I have to walk over to the spigot and twist it to the right, hoping that the water isn’t shut off.

Creativity is not a straight line. There is no singular creative path. The very essence of creativity is that it wanders deep into the unknown, into the unexplored. So, how do you tap into something when you don’t know what will trigger it?

Go to your happy place

Literally, or figuratively. Where do you feel most at peace? The most yourself? Think about it if you can’t be there right now. Meditate. Imagine. Close your eyes and breathe.

Get up and dance

Or go for a run, or a bike ride. Get your blood moving, and inspiration will follow. I find my mind is most creative during and after cardio. Something about that fleeting feeling makes my mind wander to the most delightful places.

Read

Nothing — not even Walden — was created in a bubble. Explore the world through your iBooks library. Your favorite Medium publications.

Just start writing

It doesn’t matter what it is. Put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard. Just start. You might be surprised by the art that comes forth from what you thought was nothing.

It’s never nothing.
