Cydonia Region — the face of Mars

Zahava is on the run for the first time in her life, not knowing who she is or where she could call home. So many things fell into place as she left the Council’s compound. The cracks in the utopia she lived in, burst open.

Almost two years have passed since the Elders declared Zahava and her dragon, Levana, as enemies to the future of Mars. The bond between dragon and rider has grown stronger; they sometimes think as one.

After a brief and violent encounter with a convoy of elite guards from the Council, they realized that staying in any one place for too long would be a risk to their lives.

They slowly traveled the face of Mars, circling around, approaching the equator. Levana is now full size and wants to leave the planet, testing each flight farther beyond the stratosphere. Levana’s home planet is calling her. Zahava can feel it, too.

The vast barren landscape of Mars has become her prison, but the new night sky of Mars is beautiful, with meteor showers happening almost every night now. She lost her mother before she could remember, her father only a few years ago, and now she lost the only home she ever knew.

Zahava feels homesick, and connects with the meteors, that must also be far from home. She wonders where they came from, and surprisingly asks herself how long it will be until she meets another dragon rider? She doesn’t believe in fate or destiny, but she knows it is only a matter of time before it happens.

Zahava is often left alone at night while Levana goes out to hunt. Zahava doesn’t know where she goes, but Levana is always back before the morning. As Zahava falls asleep on the open surface of the planet, her mind wanders to the stars, the power of the dragons, and the search for a homeland.

“I am flying through space.” Mars is staring at her from behind in the distance. The silence of the stars envelop her as Levana slowly bats her wings, approaching home. The electric storms make the hair on Zahavas’ arms tingle and itch, but there’s no way to scratch through a space suit. She remembers to breathe, and the air inside her suit smells like lavender mixed with something tart she has never tasted before.

Zahava knows she is dreaming as she flies above Levana’s home planet. She stares down to see more water than she ever imagined existed. With waves and strange water vessels violently crashing, it forces her to reach for words she lacks in her vocabulary from her desert home of Mars.

Levana is leading her. Or maybe she is leading Levana. The violence of the storms is increasing, but her mind keeps wandering back to the meteors. “Who sent them? How did they leave this place? And why Mars?”

They touch down on a rocky surface littered in crystals: The quarry. It’s unclear what time of day it is on the planet’s surface, but the cavern they enter produces its own light. The room opens to a vast expanse of treasure.

The wealth is vast and breathtaking, but Zahava feels it is merely a distraction, a test to occupy the weak. “What is valuable?” she asks herself. Gold, like her name, covers the floor wall to wall, but it’s so empty. Her fingers effortlessly pass through the treasures, mere mirages, as she walks through the room.

Suddenly, she feels herself being pulled, as if an invisible string is magically drawing her deeper into the cave. A set of seemingly endless stairs descend into the darkness and make Zahava question when the morning sun will awaken her from this dream.

As they approach an opening, the room becomes brighter. Zahava gasps as a wave of power washes over her. “The nest! This is where you came from.” She tiptoes like a ballerina through the room, terrified to disturb any egg’s slumber. She knows which egg she is looking for.

Delicately lifting up a glowing blue egg, Zahava is overwhelmed at seeing the most beautiful treasure she has ever seen in her life. She knows all the eggs in the room are different, and that this one chose her. She will raise this dragon.

She worries for a moment if Levana will feel betrayed, but the soothing thoughts of the dragon standing behind her abates those fears. The warmth and love that come from the egg is felt by dragon and rider as one. The egg begins to glow until the brightness has dispelled any shadow in the room.

The brightness becomes unbearable and she is forced to close her eyes. “No, not now! I don’t want to wake up! Please don’t take this from me!”

The Martian sun brings her back to reality, but a part of the egg stays with her. Time to move again today. Can’t stay in any place too long.

But this time it is different. After two years of wandering, running, and hiding, now she has a purpose. She will hunt down the meteors. She will find her egg. She will not be the only dragon rider for long.
