Far in the western edge of Indonesia, Pulau Weh stands as an untouched gem amidst the country’s bustling tourist spots like Bali and Lombok. While it has started to catch the eye of international travelers, Pulau Weh remains a relatively unfamiliar destination for many.

Its remote location, marked by the famous landmark KM 0 Indonesia, might be one reason for its clandestine charm. But for those willing to venture off the beaten path, Pulau Weh offers an array of unforgettable experiences.

Here’s a guide to help you navigate this enchanting island, ensuring you make the most of your visit without wasting time traveling back and forth across its terrain.

Getting There, Here is a Quick Guide

You have two main options to reach Pulau Weh: by plane or by sea. Flights are available exclusively from Medan. If you opt for a sea journey, you can choose between a fast boat, which takes around 45 minutes, and a ferry, which takes nearly 2 hours. For those bringing their own vehicle, the ferry is your sole option.

1. Explore Pria Laot Waterfall

Upon arriving at Balohan Harbor or Maimun Saleh Airport, make your first stop at Pria Laot Waterfall, conveniently located near the port.

This spot remains a hidden gem, with most tourists flocking to the beaches instead.

However, you won’t regret visiting this lush paradise. Enjoy the stunning scenery, the melody of bird songs, and take a refreshing dip in the waterfall’s pool.

2. Dive into the Underwater Beauty of Iboih Beach

Iboih Beach is a primary destination in Pulau Weh, boasting a plethora of diving and snorkeling equipment rental spots.

To explore at your own pace, consider renting a motorbike from places like Erick’s Green House, where you can secure a matic motorbike for just 100,000 IDR for the whole day.

Erick’s Green House also offers other rental options such as snorkeling and scuba diving gear.

3. Take a Padi Diving Course

While at Iboih Beach, enroll in a Padi Diving Course to enhance your underwater adventure.

Rental prices for diving equipment are reasonable, starting at 360,000 IDR for a single dive, 1 million IDR for three dives in a day, and up to 2.8 million IDR for a four-day diving extravaganza.

Note that these prices do not include boat rental, additional options, or the diving training itself, which you need to complete in Padi’s pool first.

4. Snorkel Around Rubiah Island

To reach Rubiah Island, rent a boat from Iboih Beach for around 100,000 IDR. Alternatively, opt for a glass-bottom boat for a clearer view of the mesmerizing marine life, though this comes at a higher price ranging from 250,000 to 350,000 IDR depending on the boat’s size.

The waters are crystal clear, and after a scenic boat ride, dive into a snorkeling adventure at the designated spot on the island’s southern part.

Rental for a full snorkeling set is just 40,000 IDR, but remember to wear a shirt to protect yourself from jellyfish stings.

Initially, you might be disappointed with the coral and fish variety, but as you snorkel deeper towards the southern part of Rubiah Island, you’ll be awed by its underwater beauty.

Note that the northern part, known to house more coral and fish varieties, is off-limits for snorkeling.

5. Relax at Bixio Cafe

Finding Bixio Cafe might be a bit tricky, with only a small sign on the roadside and a footpath leading you to this hidden gem located right next to the beach.

The stunning sea view complements the cafe’s delightful Italian offerings, ranging from pasta and tiramisu to salads.

After tasting their food, it’s clear why it’s so exceptional — the owner’s brother-in-law is Italian! Do note that mobile phone signals might be scarce here.

6. Visit the Iconic KM 0 Indonesia Monument

Continue your journey to the KM 0 Indonesia Monument, situated at the island’s northernmost tip.

Be cautious as you navigate the hilly terrain and steep climbs, keeping your vehicle in low gear.

Despite ongoing road constructions, no roads are completely closed, ensuring a smooth journey for visitors.

Once at the monument, hike a bit further to reach the island’s tip for a photo op, but be careful as the path can be treacherous.

7. Adventure in Gua Sarang

Entrance to Gua Sarang is a mere 5,000 IDR. This site is perfect for outbound activities, with ample facilities including a quiet cafe and spacious outdoor areas.

You can visit Gua Sarang by renting a boat from the local operators, or if you’re feeling adventurous, hike along the rocky beachside path.

Exercise caution as the terrain can be challenging.

8. Savor the Local Brew at De Sagoe

Don’t miss out on trying the renowned Acehnese coffee at De Sagoe in central Sabang.

Here, you can witness the unique preparation method where baristas brew the coffee in boiling water and filter it repeatedly through several containers.

This tradition is a signature of Aceh’s coffee stalls.

9. Capture Moments at Gapang Beach

Gapang Beach offers a stark contrast to Iboih Beach, with its livelier waves and lush shoreline filled with Gapang trees.

The scenery is breathtaking, providing ample photo opportunities. Bring your camera and immortalize your memories here.

10. Unwind in Sabang City Center

Sabang’s city center is your go-to spot for ATM access, though most resorts and recreational spots now offer EDC machines.

This area is recommended for dining, resting, and other needs due to its affordability compared to other parts of Pulau Weh.

Consider staying at Hotel Montana Sabang, a great option at just 350,000 IDR per night.

Of course, the choice between a hotel stay and experiencing the various resorts on the island depends on your preferences.

Pulau Weh still has many hidden spots waiting to be discovered.

One of the best ways to uncover these treasures is by interacting with the locals, who are more than happy to share the wonders of their island with visitors.
