Your 20s is a journey not a destination take your time and enjoy it

Nothing quite prepares you for your 20s, when I was younger, I thought I’d have everything figured out in my 20s, I thought the career, business, house, car would all be SORTED, and I can’t even explain how wrong I was! It doesn’t quite work out like that for most people.

If you’re feeling stuck, you’re not alone as many of us have felt like this. I still have to continuously remind myself at times, not to worry and that its okay to be figuring things out as you go along.

In this blog, I share some of the things I’ve had to remind myself of whenever I start to feel stuck.

1. You don’t have to have it figured out

In your 20s you may feel like you have to have everything figured out by a certain age, people tell themselves that they need to earn a certain amount before they turn 30 or that they need to buy a house, a car and get the lavish high paying job by 25.

As much as its good to have goals and aims, it’s also okay if you haven’t achieved what you thought you would achieve by a certain age. It is unrealistic to expect yourself to have everything you want when you are only just starting out.

If you are not where you want to be, be easy on yourself, as building the life you want is a process and takes time and patience to get there.

2. Job Rejection is normal

People tend to start their careers in their 20s usually after graduating or finishing school, what people soon realise is that it is very rare to land your dream job on the first try. People may have to go through numerous job rejections before they finally get that job acceptance letter.

It can be disheartening and a bit of shock when you are continuously being rejected, as no one tells you that having a degree or finishing school does not automatically grant you a job, it takes a lot of resilience and dedication to continue applying until you finally land the job you want.

As time goes on, people do change jobs or careers, and have to go through the job application process where they may encounter rejection again. Having to encounter rejection again when applying for other jobs shows that rejection is a normal part of the application process.

3. Don’t compare yourself

In the age of social media, it is easy to compare yourself to other people’s lives. Especially when influencers and celebrities present a high-end lifestyle on social media, it can make you question the type of life you are living. When you feel like this, it is important to remember that social media is not real life, and some influencers showcase a particular lifestyle deliberately to sell to their audience.

Also, behind what you see on social media, everyone has there own struggles that they are battling with in private.

So its important that you focus on your own life, as you don’t know what other people are going through regardless of how lavish they are portraying their lives to be.

4. It’s okay to have a balance

It can be difficult to have a balance when we live in a society that emphasises hard work and chasing goals. This can make it hard for people to focus on things other than work. This is because you may feel like you have to continuously be working towards something and you may feel guilty when you decide to stop and do something non-work related that does not involve achieving a goal.

Having a balance and doing things other than work is important to build a life you enjoy.

5. Enjoy yourself

This leads me to my final point, in your 20s its important to remember to enjoy yourself. Your 20s should not solely be about working hard, it should also be about making time to do things you enjoy. You can easily burn yourself out if all you do is focus on work and not make time for non-work related things.

So don’t forget to make fun plans for yourself where you can.
