CTR? FTW!

What’s this animal exactly?
Well, not really. It’s just another jargon used by some digital marketers who happens to run ads in the search engine and social media.

Yeah, WTF?
CTR stands for Click-Trough Rate. Simply means the result of your click count divided by your impression number on any given ad. Easy right?

(CTR = Click/Impression x 100%)

Any example?
Sure. Let say you run an ad via Google Ads and the ad report shows that you collect 100 clicks from 10,000 impressions. That means your click rate is 1%. Ease your mind by think of “impression” as the number of people who saw your ad and “click” as the amount of click from that ad.

Hmmm, make sense. What’s the average rate? Any good target rate?
Hmmm, it depends. Based on research from Wordstream, the average number for CTR in Google Ads is 1.91% and 0.35% for Google Display Network. Pretty low actually. The online ad competition is a fierce fight but worth the tears because each advertiser can specify where the ads will be shown(targeted). Generally, you need to beat the average rate before succeed or convert the clicker into sales.

Whoa, hold on! That complicated?
Indeed, the reason why the ad was aired because the product owner wants to sell but sells won’t be automatically made. The stage will be, people who saw the ad => click on it => decided to make a purchase => and finally make a payment. We’ll talk more about this in the Conversion Rate topic.

Why is this important for me to understand?
As a business owner, at some point, you will likely to run an ad on the internet. So, if you understand this concept thoroughly, estimating your ROI gets easier and clear trajectory lays in front of you. Higher CTR means a campaign has succeeded to reach target the audience. Other than that, you could also lower your cost-per-click (CPC) because those clicker has been filtered by your keyword filtration.
