Purposeful Engineering

Purposeful engineering is not simply the science of designing and building technologies, understanding elements and materials, and coming up with innovations that set new specification standards for speeds and feeds. No, engineering as we see it starts with a commitment; a commitment to reset customer and partner expectations for how a product, solution — or program for that matter — will perform in the real world.

To meet this commitment, we absolutely need to consider the elements, materials and specifications, but we need to channel innovation to address market realities, business practices, customer needs and end-user experiences. In doing so we engineer with purpose.

An example of purposeful engineering can be seen in how our team engineered a modular headphone jack on the LG LS766A Personal Healthcare Smart Touch TV for hospital environments. Working with hospitals, we learned of headphone inserts breaking into the input of the TVs from LG and other providers. This typically results in downtime and usually requires a major repair. By having a simple modular fix to this issue, we save our customers considerable time, inconvenience and expense.

This unit is also serviceable from the rear, which is another instance of simple but purposeful engineering. Our team observed that many of the competitive units required removal of the front of the screen to service the television and that it was very often impossible to recreate the original factory-grade seal. By making the unit serviceable without having to break the seal, our LG team advanced quality, performance and cost of ownership!

Likewise, brightness of the LG IPS Display was developed in appreciation of the detail-oriented work of radiologists and as an acknowledgement of the fatigue issues that can occur when clinicians spend hours in front of displays. By taking a contrarian approach and challenging every assumption, the LG team engineered the LG IPS Display to be brighter and higher performing than many competitive offerings.

Another example of purposeful engineering and how it can improve integrator efficiency, provider economics and patient experience is the LG 12MP that is up to 50% lighter than competitive offerings. The LG team meticulously examined every element, component and material used in the unit and purposefully engineered weight from the design. In doing so they created a display that is high-performing, robust and reliable but also much lighter than lesser-performing units. With the LG 12MP, LG enables systems integrators to use a lighter mount and provide the healthcare customer with significant cost-savings as a result.

Our healthcare community appreciates that it’s all about comfort and care. It’s what makes healthcare different from other “industries” and industrial complexes. Our mission at LG is to advance comfort and care with innovative technologies and solutions. Purposeful engineering enables LG and our systems integration partners to achieve that mission.
