Trump Had Asked Comey to End Flynn Investigation
According to a bombshell report released by the New York Times on Tuesday afternoon, “President Trump asked the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, to shut down the federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, in an Oval Office meeting in February, according to a memo Mr. Comey wrote shortly after the meeting.”
This is the most evident piece of information showing that President Trump has tried to influence Justice Department and F.B.I. investigations into his ties to Russia. Comey wrote this memo following the meeting, because he was shocked that this was asked of him. This is one of many documents that Comey used in a paper trail “documenting what he perceived as the president’s improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation.” Just as a note, any memos of Comey’s can be used as evidence in court, just as is the case for any F.B.I. agent.
This is yet another bombshell story released in the last few days, and all related to the same thing: Russia. As more and more information has come out, it still hasn’t turned Republican legislators against Trump. Will this?
Both House Speaker Paul Ryan and CIA Director Mike Pompeo, according to NBC News, refused to answer questions about the report. No other prominent Republicans have chosen to comment, yet. However, Democrats have. Chuck Schumer said that this report calls into question “the independence of our nation’s highest law enforcement agencies.” He continued: “In a week full of revelation after revelation, on a day when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, they have. Our nation is being tested in unprecedented ways. I say to all my colleagues in the Senate: History is watching.” Nancy Pelosi said that “[w]ith each passing day, the President’s actions give greater and greater urgency to the need for a full and independent investigation of the Trump-Russia connection.”
As the onion that is this story continues to shed layers, some of us will be more and more outraged. Many legal analysts are calling this obstruction of justice, and are relating it to Nixon’s impeachment after instructing the F.B.I. to end its investigation into Watergate. But none of this matters unless Republicans can put country over party, people over votes.
