Should the Electoral College be abolished?

The topic of this essay will be whether we abolish or keep the Electoral College. I will be going into a bit of the history behind the Electoral College and the proposed “popular vote”. I will also explain what kind of government we have and how it is structured. I will explain the history behind the popular vote as well. And last I will give the pros and cons of the Electoral College and how it has affected the United States of America. I will also give some of the Founding Fathers views on democracy and how that relates to the Electoral College.

Article II section I of the Constitution, is where the Electoral College is listed [2]. The Electoral College is a formal body of electors that elect the president and vice president of the United States of America [2]. Each state has as many electors as it does the House of Representatives and Senators in Congress [2]. There have also been a few amendments that changed the Electoral College [2]. They are the 12th and 23rd amendments [2]. The 12th allowed the separation of the ballots for determining the president and vice president of America [2]. And the 23rd gave the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) three electoral votes [2].
