Ireland teaches Israel a lesson:
You can’t bully and bomb your way into making colonialism ok.
The big news in Ireland is that Israel has finally withdrawn its embassy from Dublin. Isn’t it great when the trash takes itself out?
[You’ll notice that Israel isn’t pulling its embassy from South Africa. Presumably the blood diamonds there are too valuable].
However don’t be too quick to applaud the Irish government, who for all its posturing about “standing up for what is right”, has largely ignored the calls from the Irish people for the past year to expel the Israeli Ambassador Dana Erlich.
Moreover the Irish government has long refused to enact the Occupied Territories Bill that Irish civil society groups have demanded for years.
The OTB would “ban trade between Ireland and Israel’s illegal settlements in the West Bank, making the import of goods or services originating from these lands a criminal offence”.
Thankfully the bill is seeing growing cross-party support. In fact it has been speculated that this is what scared the Zionazis away. That, and the fact that Ireland isn’t a great place to be if you’re a colonizer.
Naturally Israel trotted out cries of “antisemitism” as an excuse for its withdrawal. Honestly with friends like…
