The Occupation
Israel had occupied Gaza and the West Bank militarily for about 20 years by the time Hamas appeared on the scene in 1987.
That’s two miserable decades in which Palestinians suffered “brute force, repression and fear, collaboration and treachery, beatings and torture chambers, and daily intimidation, humiliation, and manipulation” at the hands of the IOF, according to Israeli historian Benny Morris.
Israeli settlements in the occupied territories increased the Jewish settler population in the West Bank such that it nearly doubled from 35,000 in 1984 to 64,000 in 1988.
This coincided with Israeli politicians brazenly and openly discussing transferring the Palestinian population out of those occupied territories. Top government officials like Deputy Defense minister Michael Dekel, Cabinet Minister Mordechai Tzipori and government Minister Yosef Shapira had no qualms about airing their opinion on how Israel could ethnically cleanse Palestine.
